Sebastian Helling (b. 1975, London) received his BA from the London College of Printing (2001) and has a double MFA from the Royal College of Art in London (2003) and the Oslo Art Academy (2011).
Helling’s practice encompasses painting and drawing, positioned deliberately in a field that resists conventional categorization. His works are neither abstract nor figurative, neither purely gestural nor strictly compositional. Instead, multiple artistic languages overlap, collide, and negate one another, creating a charged visual field open for interptetation. His works are characterized by an intense material presence where traditional painterly strokes coexist with spray-painted elements, text, collage, smudges, and marks applied directly by hand. In the tension between control and disruption, Helling’s works embody an ongoing process of tearing apart and rebuilding, mirroring cyclical forces found in nature itself. As with all compelling painterly expression, Helling’s presence is fully embedded in the work. The canvases do not point outward toward external representation, but inward, reflecting the artist’s physical and psychological engagement with the medium.
Helling is recognized as an important voice on both the national and international art scenes, and his work has been acquired by influential institutions and private collectors worldwide.
