Bruised poetics

24.10 — 24.11.2024

This exhibition brings together works by two Oslo-based artists, Andrea Scholze and Sebastian Helling , whose practices are based respectively in ceramics and painting. Despite being part of different artistic generations and mediums, Scholze and Helling are united by their explorations of expressionism and the human experience, each embracing a distinctive yet complementary visual language.

Helling’s large canvases erupt with rough brushstrokes and convey a visceral expression of emotion and immediacy. His approach, deeply rooted in the abstract- and neo-expressionist tradition, reflects both an internal and external struggle—capturing the tension between the raw intensity of self-expression and the chaotic nature of the world around.

Scholze, through her roughly shaped ceramics, offers a counterpoint. Her work, while more intimate, speaks to the idea of community and belonging. She constructs a world of outsiders, a community formed on the fringes yet bound together by shared experiences. Scholze’s creations evoke a sense of sanctuary, a quiet rebellion where vulnerability becomes strength.

Whilst Helling’s paintings are a meeting between the artist and the canvas, Scholze’s practice is more rooted in an emotional encounter between the work and the viewer. Together, these artists create a dialogue between the brutal poetics we find in the human experience and in the search for togetherness. The interplay between their respective mediums highlights how different forms of expression can meet to convey deeper human truths.

This exhibition presents an exploration of what it means to be both within and outside of society—a place where outsiders come together, sharing the spaces they inhabit and the worlds they build. It is at once a celebration of difference and a meditation on the poetics of belonging.
