Oslo Municipality’s Art Collection has acquired six photographic works by Espen Gleditsch from the solo exhibition Sanatorium Stenersen, at the National Museum, Villa Stenersen (10th of May – 31st of August 2025).

In this series, Gleditsch examines how health architecture has shaped and influenced modernistic architecture. By turning his camera toward the forms and functions of sanatoriums together with light, air and nature he opens up new ways of seeing the relationship between health, architecture, and the ideals of modernism.

Sanatorium Stenersen was the first exhibition in which Villa Stenersen has been used for a curated solo exhibition by the National Museum.

Espen Gleditsch (b. 1983, Holmestrand, NO) holds a Master’s degree from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (2015). He works primarily with photography, often taking as his point of departure historical events, artworks, and architecture. A recurring theme in his practice is how shifts in meaning and misinterpretations shape both our understanding of history and the reception of art and architecture.

In previous projects, ancient sculpture, architecture, and colour have been recurring motifs. Gleditsch has distinguished himself with a sophisticated eye and the ability to create open, visually powerful images that invite reflection.

His works are represented in several major collections, including Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Equinor Art Programme, Oslo Municipality’s Art Collection, Haugar Art Museum, KORO (Public Art Norway), the University of Oslo, Preus Museum, the Møller Collection, Storebrand Art Collection, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Norges Bank, and the MoMA Library, Artist Book Collection.
