Untitled (Invisible Cities) IV

Acrylic and filler on mdf, ash wood frame

With an abstract idiom, Josefine Lyche explores the possibilities of painting. Lyche's paintings with acrylic and trowel are a technique she is particularly known for and was also her breakthrough as an artist. Lyche has, among other things, shown large murals in this technique at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Meilahti Art Museum, Reykjavik Art Museum and the Royal College of Art in London.

In the book "Ny norsk kunst etter 1990", Øystein Ustvedt, 2011, Lyche's paintings are described: "Contrasting fields of color are brought up with a wide trowel and in many layers and then ground down to a uniform overall effect, as in a spatial total work of art (... ) where the combination of slightly sweet-laden colours, traces and wounds in the surface and an almost mechanical production created a cool, but very sensuous surface. (...) The works take us back to an important starting point for this type of abstract painting: Claude Monet's horizontal water mirrors and water lilies."

Josefine Lyche (b. 1973, Bergen) is educated from the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts. Lyche explores the relationship between a kind of nonfigurative, post-conceptual painting to a cosmic, psychedelic New Age iconography, mixed with references to a classical painterly visual language with some added esoteric properties. The works display a combination of materiality and striking visuality that points to the belief in a beyond which promises eternal spiritual enlightenment. She primarily works within the field of abstraction, having made a significant mark within painting and sculpture.

Lyches work has been acquired by numerous private and public collections, amongst others Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo, Oslo Municipality Art Collection, Caviar Factory Art Museum, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, KLP and Dnb-Nor.
