Christmas movies 🎄

12/4/2025

Christmas is getting closer by the day. Need a little help finding the holiday spirit? Here are our best film tips for the season… or at least our favourites.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), directed by Tim Burton

Halloween meets Christmas in a wonderfully strange mix. A small pre-holiday nightmare from us to you.

The Family Stone (2005), directed by Thomas Bezucha

Sarah Jessica Parker plays a tightly wound businesswoman who visits her boyfriend’s warm and free-spirited family for Christmas. Things go wrong in all the best ways. I remember it as a mix of humour, heartbreak and affection. A great holiday farce.

The Holdovers (2023), directed by Alexander Payne

We are recommending this one even though we have not seen it yet. It received a number of awards when it premiered and follows a grumpy history teacher who ends up spending the school holidays with a rebellious student.

Black Doves (2024), directed by Alex Gabassi and Lisa Gunning

Not a film, but included because this 2024 miniseries has the potential to become a future Advent and Christmas favourite. It is a six part spy thriller starring Keira Knightley and uses a wintery, festive London as the backdrop for tension, action and drama. Ideal December evening viewing or something to binge during the quiet days between Christmas and New Year.

Harry Potter (2001 to 2011) and The Lord of the Rings (2001 to 2003)

An obvious recommendation. And for anyone who has not read the books, start there.

Metropolitan (1990), directed by Whit Stillman

Manhattan. Christmas Vacation. Not so long ago.

An amazing comedy that explores group dynamics and class in The Rat Pack – a friend group that gather each night during the debutant season.
