Sebastian Helling aquired by Equinor Art programme
Sebastian Hellings Work Signaled for Alien Ships is aquried by the Equinor Art Programme. The work was shown in Helling´s exhibition Melee in January 2026.
Signaled for Alien Ships (2025) can be described as a hybrid between a painting, collage, drawing and text. In the painting we meet energetic brush strokes in oil and spraypaint over a grey toned, metallic background. When observed closely, thick and tactile structures appears clearly. In the middle of the work, A4 sheets are placed horizontally lined. The sheets appears as spontaneous sketches with text fragments containing phrases like "you", "Strawberry nothing is real" and "Never forget me", as if they are torn pages from his own journal and integrated in the painting.
The work has previously been shown as an earlier version at TWFINEART in Australia, in the exhibition Godspeed for Pete´s sake in 2020, and is a good example of Helling´s dynamic approach to his own paintings, as well as his steadily work and developent in the studio. This points towards a central part of Hellings artistry: Paintings that are continously under prosess, where a piece is not neccesarily done after an exhibition, but can develop through time and be shown again in a new context, progessing together with the artist.
The includement in Equinor Art programme´s collection marks a new point in the Signaled for alien ships life. What earlier has been an artwork in progress, has now gained a new form for embedding. Equinor Art Programme´s objective is to build a clear and relevant collection of Norwegian Contemporary art, that can inspire to new perspectives as we face a rapidly more complex and global reality. Signaled for alien ships can here point to what lies ahead, towards the unknown and what is still not fully understood.
