In his series 'Wonders of the Volcano' Per Christian Brown explores the nuanced relationship between image and observer, captivated by metamorphosis and change - both natural and cultural. This artistic project, based on the artist's residency in Iceland in 2016, focuses on the visual representation of the four elements: earth, fire, air, and water, inspired by the philosophical studies of Gaston Bachelard.

Through photography, video, and sound installations, Brown captures volcanic traces on the Icelandic landscape - visible both on the surface and in the mysterious lava caves underground. His photographs include abstract compositions with liquid pigments and minerals, offering a subjective, emotional interpretation of volcanism. This exploration delves into the poetic and material qualities associated with the four elements.

Per Christian Brown (b. 1976, Stavanger) is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo. Brown works with analog photography and video. His works are prepared in a picturesque way with often clear stagings that are immortalized in the works. Brown is fascinated by metamorphosis, change and transience, both naturally and culturally. One of his latest series "Wonders of the Volcano" shows, among other things, stagings of liquid color pigments in water. This is part of a larger project where he explores man's emotional and physical relationship to the elements earth, fire, air and water. Brown has been purchased by, among others, Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum, Rogaland Kunstmuseum, Statoil Kunstsamling, Norsk Kulturråd and Oslo Municipality.
