NEVER

20.03 — 27.04.2025

Never, that means birch bark in Norwegian—a material that has been used by humans for thousands of years to light fires, cover roofs, and craft everyday objects. The history of birch bark is also the history of how humans have lived in harmony with nature while making use of its versatility and abundance.

In connection with Marianne Heske’s work on Project Gjerdeløa in the early 1980s, she was offered a collection of birch bark. The bark had been stored on the farm of those who owned the barn and had been in the family's possession for several generations. Since then, it has remained in the artist's care for nearly 50 years. Over this time, she has been the steward of a resource, waiting for the right moment to give it a new life.

The exhibition Never is an installation inspired by the grandeur of nature and a simultaneous desire to heal the wounds humans have inflicted upon it.
